Getting a six pack is not a complicated process although it does take some work and dedication. With that being said, there are some myths about how to get abs. Here are the top 5 myths about six pack abs:
Myth #1 – Ab Exercises Give You a Six Pack
Truth – This is one of the biggest myths about six pack abs and there are millions of dollars being made from it. Just do a google search for six pack abs and see how many ab workout and ab machines you find. Everyone is looking for the easy way out and the fitness industry is trying to sell it to you over and over again. The truth is, the only way to have visible abs is to get down to a low enough body fat percentage. (10% in men, 14% in women). This can only be done through the proper diet, or burning more calories than you consume.
Myth #2 – You Can Spot Reduce Stomach Fat
Truth – You cannot spot reduce fat anywhere. We hear it all the time… “I’m ok everywhere else, I just need to lose some fat in my stomach, What can I do to get rid of it?” Where your fat loss comes from is predetermined based on genetics. Unfortunately, for men, lower stomach fat is one of the last places your body will lose fat from. So, besides liposuction, there is really no other way to lose stomach fat without losing fat everywhere else.
Myth #3 – You Have to Do Cardio to Get Ripped
Truth – Cardio is not some magic fat burning trick that will melt the fat right off of you. In fact, cardio is not even required to burn fat or get six pack abs. Being ripped comes from having muscle mass and being at a low body fat percentage. This is achieved by being in a calorie deficit. Cardio is simply a tool to help you achieve a calorie deficit each day. You can either eat less food, or do some cardio. At the end of the day, if the calorie deficit is the same, you will see the same results.
Myth #4 – Cardio is Better Than Weight Training for Burning Stomach Fat
Truth – Weight training builds muscle, steady state cardio will actually cause you to lose muscle over time. The more muscle you have on your frame, the faster your metabolism will be. If you’re wasting hours on the treadmill hoping to melt the fat away, you’re doing more harm than good. You may find some short term success and lose a few pounds, but you’ll probably end up lowering your metabolism and your fat loss will stall. A better option is to combine weight training with a little cardio and be sure you’re in a slight calorie deficit. This way you will slowly lose the fat and it will take much longer for your fat loss to stall.
Myth #5 – You Have to Eat Clean to Have Abs
Truth – Being in a calorie deficit, and hitting the right macronutrients numbers (protein, carbs, and fats) are what really matters. This is another one of the myths about six pack abs that I hear most often. What is a clean food anyway? Are you washing it with soap and water? If your chicken breast, brown rice, and olive oil have the same macronutrient breakdown as this hamburger I’m eating, why would my body treat it any differently? It won’t! Now I’m not saying you should eat junk all the time… You should still strive to comprise most of your diet with nutrient dense foods, but it’s ok to have that snickers bar, as long as you fit it into your macros. As long as you hit your protein, carb, and fat numbers, and stay in a calorie deficit, you will continue to lose fat. Don’t feel like you have to be a food nazi and shun everything but lean meat and vegetables.
